West Linn Remodel

We’re moving right along with this West Linn, Oregon interior remodel. We’ve restructured the fireplace hearth extension and surround using framing and concrete blocks to resize the opening to accommodate the Regency brand CI 2600 Woodstove insert. Above that, we’ve installed additional structural components to the TV wall mount location and mantle. We installed cement board on these studs to create the new fireplace wall. We are now resurfacing this fireplace surround and floor to ceiling on all vertical wall surfaces and corners using Eldorado stone brand European ledge stone in sidewalk color. We will finish the hearth extension in grey hearth stones.

Certified!

As certified chimney sweeps, we are continually sharpening our skills, knowledge base, and technique regarding safety practices for the fireplace chimney and venting. As well as learning about and following the venting and chimney safety techniques and practices recommended by the CSIA and the OCSA.  We also maintain a familiarity and compliance with applicable building codes regarding venting and chimney products while having a strict adherence to manufacturers’ installation instructions for any products installed.

While hiring a an uncertified company is never a great idea, also make sure the sweep coming to your home is certified (Not someone in the office). We’re happy to say that our owner Louis Lee (VP of the OCSA) has renewed his state level certification and we’ve welcomed one of the only female sweeps in the industry to our team, Kylie Marble!

SE Portland Chimney Rebuild and Tuckpoint Part 3

As this project hits the midway point, you can see the before and after of our tuckpointing. This historic chimney originally had red mortar, and was improperly repaired at some point in the past with product that did not match. We’ve completely tuck pointed this historic chimney with matching to original mortar.

This fireplace chimney was cracked loose and crumbling above the roofline with poor flashings at the roofline. This chimney was dismantled down to just below the roofline and now will be rebuilt reusing the brick from the takedown to maintain the historic look.

NE Portland Clinker Brick Chimney Rebuild

Look at these beautiful historic clinker brick, unfortunately both chimneys are cracked, loose and crumbling above the roofline due to excessive saturation decay caused by inadequate flashing, cracks in the crown and metal coverings that do not adequately protect the chimney from PNW rain. Clinker bricks are partially-vitrified bricks used in the construction of buildings. Clinker bricks are produced when wet clay bricks are exposed to excessive heat during the firing process, sintering the surface of the brick and forming a shiny, dark-colored coating. Clinker bricks have a blackened appearance, and they are often misshapen or split. Clinkers are so named for the metallic sound they make when struck together.

We’re going to take these chimneys down to below the roofline and rebuild reusing the historic clinker bricks. Stay tuned for updates on this restoration project.
