Your fireplace increases your homes value

When you’re making renovations to a home, how do you know what’s a solid investment? A worthy update can either serve to reduce your cost of living while you remain in the home or add significant value to the home’s sale price when you decide to put it on the market. Fireplaces are a hot commodity for many home buyers.
According to a 2016 survey, buyers rank fireplaces as one of the three amenities they’d most like in their house. Additionally, 60% of new homes have a fireplace, up from 36% in the 1970s.
Realtor.com found that a fireplace was the No. 1 feature most often mentioned in home listings and more than 60% of homeowners and buyers say they are looking for a fireplace when purchasing a home.
Fireplaces have always been a hot commodity for home sellers and can boost a home’s value by as much as 12-15%.

National Chimney Sweep Guild 2018 National Convention

Always seeking to further our education and skills, the members of the Oregon Chimney Sweep’s Association meet each May day weekend. This year,  our annual meeting will be moved to be in conjunction with the NCSG 2018 National Convention, here in Portland, Oregon April 18th – 21st.

Remember to only hired certified chimney sweeps to inspect your fireplace and chimney. The O.C.S.A. credential was established in 1983 to provide homeowners a means to measure a chimney sweep’s technical expertise. In addition to passing a rigorous examination, each person wishing to hold a O.C.S.A. certification must also agree to abide by a stringent Code of Ethics. We feel this is critical to protecting homeowners from potential scams. If a O.C.S.A. Certified Chimney Sweep is found to be in violation, their certification may be revoked.

A proper chimney cap is one that shelters and protects the entire masonry crown footprint and all terminations, with a screen to keep our pests and debris. A masonry chimney is a clay porous structure that absorbs water and becomes saturated in the PNW climate. In this saturated state, masonry decay is accelerated. It is regular exterior building maintenance to apply a water sealant to any masonry structure every 10 years.
