Further into the demolition process, you can see where the smoke has found its way through cracks, and stained the insulation. This is a great visual representation of why cracks are a concern for us in the industry. Visible smoke is mostly carbon (soot), tar, oils and ash, smoke inhalation is also a danger of smoke that can cause serious injury and death. Many compounds of smoke from fires are highly toxic and/or irritating. The most dangerous is carbon monoxide leading to carbon monoxide poisoning, sometimes with the additive effects of hydrogen cyanide and phosgene.
Further into the core of the chimney you can see that there is 0 clearance to combustibles. A portion of a masonry chimney located in the interior of the building or
within the exterior wall of the building shall have a minimum air space clearance to combustibles of 2 inches.
